I will be one of a team journeying to Antarctica on the 2041 ClimateForce Antarctic Expedition in March 2022. This will be a global team with participants from all continents joining together for a unique 12-day educational journey from Ushuaia in Argentina, going by ship to the coast of Antarctica, ‘the Last Great Wilderness on Earth,’ led by polar explorer and sustainability champion Robert Swan OBE - the first person in history to trek to both of Earth’s poles.
Robert's "Leadership on the Edge" programme comprises a mix of lectures, shore landings, hikes, group discussions, workshops with the aim of training participants on up-to-date climate science, sustainability, and leadership skills, and equipping us with the tools necessary to create meaningful impacts in our communities, institutions, companies, and governments.
I'm still not sure how I've ended up being picked as a participant! It started off with a talk from Robert Swan at one of our quarterly "town hall" meetings, finishing up with the teasing mention of one person from Origami being able to join this Expedition. Fast forward a few months and the selection process was initiated - a few weeks later, after a few late nights reading up on the opportunity, completing an application form and preparing a presentation to our CEO, I got offered the place.
At the moment I'm lurching from exhilaration to panic: whilst visiting Antarctica and seeing first hand the raw enormity of nature and the effects of climate change upon it will be amazing, the programme looks intense and the expectations are high. Can I live up to them? There's a lot of emphasis on the young leaders - am I too old? And the question on most people's lips - how cold is it going to be?
