The Colour of Ice

I'd kind of assumed that the colours in the pictures I'd seen of Antarctica were enhanced but wow, they're really not (although I'm not sure my photos really do it justice). There's a whole range of shades from blue to turquoise and on top of that the effects are magnified through the water.

The blue comes from the compaction of the ice over many years, squashing the air bubbles that are naturally found in the ice formation and making it denser. With less air, more red and yellow light is absorbed with the blue light being reflected back - giving the ice it's many blue hues.

This clear ice was probably glacier melt that had recently refrozen

In addition there's such a range of shapes and textures: rather than trying to find pictures in the clouds the pastime became finding pictures in the ice.

A face in the ice!

Would this look out of place in Trafalgar Square?
